Name:  Conan Edogawa (Shinichi Kudo)
Canon:  Detective Conan

Age: Currently 17, but appears to be 7

Type of Character:  Canon
Reference: Wiki

Setting Concepts:

Setting Time: Modern Japan. The world of Detective Conan is very similar to the real world.

Setting Place:
Most of the action takes place in Beika City, a fictional district of Tokyo. The name of Beika City is a reference to Baker Street in the Sherlock Holmes novels, and the district is filled with businesses and places that reference famous detectives. For example the Cafe Poirot and the restaurant Columbo.

Apotoxin-4869:
The drug that shrank Shinichi. It was intended to be a drug that killed in a way undetectable by autopsies, possibly by causing mass cellular apoptosis. For a very few lucky people, it does something very different. It de-ages them without affecting their brain or nervous system. The drug has no permanent antidote, although a few methods have been found that can suppress the drug for a short time. There is some speculation that the drug may have originally been developed through immortality research, but this has not yet been confirmed by canon.

Shinichi Kudo:
Conan's real identity. A famous high school detective with a perfect case record and a reputation for being able to solve all the cases that stumped the police. The media nicknamed him the Holmes of the modern era and the great detective of the east.

High School Detective:

A teenage amateur detective. They are too young to practice as private detectives, but often take cases as favors to the police or the families of victims. They tend to be very intelligent, and prone to trouble. Shinichi is a high school detective, as is his best friend Heiji Hattori.

Phantom Thief:
A gentleman thief that challenges the police with coded riddles.

Mouri Detective Agency:
Conan lives in an apartment above the agency with the Mouri family.

Tropical Land:
A popular amusement park. It was at Tropical Land that Shinichi was caught by the Black Organization and poisoned.

Hawaii:
Shinichi's parents have a house in Hawaii, and he spent time there when he was younger. He learned to shoot, pilot small aircraft and drive there. Throughout the series it has become a running joke that if you ask Conan where he learned to do something, the answer is always Hawaii.

Black Organization:

An international criminal syndicate that has infiltrated all levels of government, law enforcement and industry. They are based in Japan, but have appeared in the United States. Their higher level agents are distinguishable only by the fact that they dress and black and each have code names based on alcoholic beverages.  They are secretive, and  completely ruthless. They have bombed entire hospitals and hotels simply to kill a single person. The organization's aim has been stated to be "to raise the dead against the stream of time." The  organization currently believes Shinichi to be dead.

Vermouth:
A high-ranking member of the Black Organization, but who seems to have her own agenda. She knows Conan's true identity, but seems to be protecting him for her own reasons. This may be related to the fact that she was once a friend of his mothers.  For an unexplained reason, she is much younger now than she was when she knew Conan's mother.

Tokyo Metropolitan Police:
The local police force that Conan has the most contact with. He often works with them to solve murders and other cases in the Tokyo area. They've spent enough time with his eccentricities to know to listen to him, even if they do still think he's a kid.

FBI:
Conan is actively concealing the fact that a small group of FBI agents are operating in Japan without permission. They are investigating the Black Organization. Conan has their numbers, and has called them in on cases before.

Detective Boys:
The group of kids that Conan spends most of his time with, whether he likes it or not. They decided he was their friend, and that they were a detective club. And he was doomed from that moment on.

Sleeping Kogoro:
Kogoro Mouri is the detective Conan currently lives with (and the father of his childhood best friend). He is a capable detective, but not a brilliant one. Early in the series, Conan decided that the best way to track the criminal activities of the Black Organization was to build up Kogoro's reputation as a detective so that people would bring difficult cases to him. Whenever Kogoro was about to make a wrong conclusion in a case, Conan started quickly sedating him with a sedative dart and using his voicechanger to take over the deduction. Enter Sleeping Kogoro, a detective famous for always solving cases while pretending to be asleep.

Personality:
The first thing anyone notices about Conan is his intelligence. He knows and understands far too much, even for his true age. Ask him about practically any topic and he can ramble about it knowledgeably. As the seven -year-old he appears to be he attempts to conceal the full extent of his knowledge and deduction skill, but he has never been very successful at this. He tries to appear like an ordinary child, but he doesn't really have a clue what normal is.

He is brilliantly intelligent, cool-headed, independent, logical, and acerbic. His ability for deductive logic, extensive knowledge of esoteric topics and analytical ability make him an amazing detective. He is hardly ever wrong, once he has figured a case out. Even cases that have been labeled unsolvable. There is a reason that the media took to calling him a modern day Holmes.

But at the same times, his genius has created problems for him. He is completely unable to resist a mystery. If he finds one, his curiosity will not let him rest until he finds an answer. When in the middle of an investigation he often forgets the danger of hunting suspects in a child's body. He can deduct motives and solve impossibly complicated riddles, but he doesn't really understand people on a personal level. He didn't understand his own feelings for his childhood friend Ran until it was too late to tell her anything, and he has repeatedly missed obvious hints from others about their feelings for him. He can also be very forgetful about his personal life. He never remembers his own birthday, for example. He also has trouble relating to his peers. Even before his shrinking, he was almost completely isolated from his classmates, apart from Ran. He is most comfortable when dealing with adults at a professional level.

Conan's core personality is a bored and irritable boy. He finds most of the typical occupations of his peers uninteresting and constantly runs a sarcastic commentary on the people around him. Only a few things can snap him out of this. Any mention of Sherlock Holmes will instantly turn him into an enthusiastic geek who can ramble on for hours. And the appearance of a mystery of any kind will instantly bring out his razor sharp focus. Once he is on the hunt to solve a mystery he is almost impossible to distract. He is a huge fan of soccer, and admits to a fondness for cheesecake. And there is Ran, of course. His most important person.

Even when he was still Shinichi, he admitted to deliberately putting on a mature and serious attitude so that the police would listen to him. As Conan now he often puts on an act of sugary enthusiasm for the benefit of adults. Especially when at a murder scene and drawing attention to vital clues. He is probably truest to his own personality among his classmates in first grade and among the few people who know his secret. But even with them he is secretive.

Currently Conan has only two goals in his life. First, to reclaim his old life and to finally confess his feelings to Ran. To do this he needs to find an antidote for the poison that turned him into a child and he needs to bring an end to the Black Organization. Secondly, he has the goal of finding the truth behind every crime he stumbles across.

He believes in justice. If finding the truth involves bending or breaking the law, he will do that without a seconds regret. He also believes that there is nothing that justifies the taking of a life, even if it is a murderer's life. Once he told a fellow high school detective that cornering someone with logic and allowing them to commit suicide was the same as committing murder themselves.

He has the worst luck in the world when it comes to stumbling across cases. He can't go anywhere without dead bodies turning up somewhere. Amusement parks, the mall, bus-rides, the beach, parties, restaurants, even if he is just walking down the street. If there is a crime happening anywhere in the area, he will be there. If there is a way for a person to die, he has probably seen it before. And no matter how horrific the scene, he is never phased. He sees bodies as evidence. Nothing more.

His forced second childhood has turned him into a kind of deadpan snarker. He is never shy about making acerbic observations about the people around him, though most of those comments never leave his head. Particularly if they're getting off track in a murder investigation. Additionally, his act as a child has made him more than a little manipulative. He is entirely capable of leading adults through an entire investigation without ever letting them know what was really happening. If they still don't get it, he will resort to drugging them and using them as living puppets.

He idolizes Sherlock Holmes, and has deliberately modeled himself after the detective. And he is a natural skeptic when it comes to ghosts, aliens, and magic. He has repeatedly run into murderers attempting to disguise their crimes as the works of ghosts or local monster stories. Upon meeting any people with such special powers here, he is likely to immediately assume it is a hoax to cover up for another crime.

Shinichi has a habit of taking everything on himself. He tends to be very closemouthed about the things that are really bothering him and will never ask for help even if he needs it. He often forgets just how physically vulnerable he is right now, especially when he gets caught up in the chase. He is terrified of the Black Organization ever discovering that Shinichi Kudo is still alive. But he is most terrified that Ran will get hurt. If it means that she won't get involved he is willing to lie directly to his best friend. Even if it means she will hate him if she ever finds out.

Conan scowls down at his notebook. Ever since arriving in this city he had been determinedly collecting every piece of information he could find about how these so-called super powers worked. The very concept was ridiculous. And the lack of interest he'd seen from many of the other people here was even worse. How could anyone simply accept something like this without understanding why it worked?

It was worse than all those times someone had tried to mislead the police with magic tricks. So many times he had seen common sleight of hand used to convince the witnesses that a crime had been committed by magic or a ghost. But every time he had been able to figure out the trick. Whatever the trick or deceit here, he would figure it out.

Holmes had said it, right? There should be no combination of events for which the wit of man cannot conceive an explanation. Like his idol, Conan had always firmly believed that there was nothing in the world that could not be explained.

Matter could not simply appear out of nothing. Reality could not bend purely through someone's will. This was basic physics. There must be some trick to this.

In the end this was just another puzzle. And there was no puzzle he couldn't solve. The more complicated it became, the more he became intrigued by it. Hidden under his folded hands, the boy's lips curve into a smug smirk. He would find the secret behind this, no matter how long it took.

Suddenly he stiffens as he hears the distinctive sounds of footsteps on the library floor. Conan hastily sweeps all his research into his backpack and conceals his collection of advanced science texts under more age appropriate books. By the time the adult comes into eyesight there is nothing left to show he is anything more than a kid doing homework.

This is ridiculous!

[There was a small boy scowling up into the console's video feed with a highly offended expression on his face. Not that it was easy to see that much. Even standing on a stool he was barely tall enough to reach the console.]

There can't be a turtle that big. If it was real it would be completely violating the square-cube law. Even presuming that it was possible for a turtle to grow this big, a biological creature cannot scale up like this. The larger an animal grows, the less its proportional muscle strength. According to that law, this turtle shouldn't even be able to move and there should be severe problems with its cardiovascular and respiratory functions.

[Belatedly, he realizes that had been just a tiny bit advanced for an ordinary seven-year-old. He hastily pastes on a bright childish smile.]

I saw a program about it on television once!  It was really interesting.

"Mysteries are just puzzles created by the human mind.
If you think them over long enough it isn't difficult to come up with a logical solution.
But no matter how many times someone tries to explain it to me, I can never figure out why one person would choose to kill another. I can understand it in my head, but it just doesn't make sense to me at all."

Age:
Apparent Age: 7
Actual Age: 17

Gender/Sex: Male

Appearance:

Conan is small even for a first grader. According to official statistics he is three feet tall.

He has slightly messy black hair that sticks up at the back of his head and bright blue eyes. He always wears a pair of glasses that are a little too large for his face.

His body language and mannerisms change often, depending on whether he is putting up an act as a child or showing his true personality.

History:
There was once a famous teenage detective named Shinichi Kudo. By the age of sixteen he had solved hundreds of difficult cases and was already being asked to assist on cases by the police.  That all ended the day he finally ran into a case too big for him. While investigating some suspicious characters at an amusement park Shinichi was caught and forced to take an experimental poison. He was left for dead.

But Shinichi didn't die. Instead the poison shrank him to the size of a young child. Realizing that the criminals might return if they discovered he was still alive, Shinichi took on the identity of Conan Edogawa.  He was taken in by his childhood friend, who believed Conan to be a distant relative of Shinichi's. However, Conan refused to tell her any part of the truth in an attempt to protect her from becoming involved. Even if it meant he had to watch her wonder why Shinichi had never come home.

And that was Conan's new life. Living the life of an ordinary child, while watching his real life falling apart because he was no longer there to live it.

Over the next 700 episodes Conan would solve hundreds of mystery cases while claiming to just be a kid that was good at noticing things. Eventually Conan discovered that the criminals who poisoned him were members of a international criminal syndicate known only as the Black Organization. He dedicated himself to bringing an end to the organization.

Personality:
Conan is intelligent and cool-headed, with a strong independent streak. Sherlock Holmes is his role model.

He's an idealist who believes that there is no justification for killing another person. He values justice and truth very highly. However, he is also a pragmatist. He hates the fact that he's been forced into this situation where all he can do is lie, but if it means saving lives he will lie to and manipulate people.

He's also a sarcastic brat with a habit of running off on his own to find trouble.  He absolutely cannot resist a mystery of any kind.  And he is an extremely determined skeptic who only believes in what can be proven with science and logic. He seems to be personally offended at the very idea of such things as magic and aliens and ESP

As Conan he often puts on an act of sugary enthusiasm for the benefit of adults. He is probably truest to his own personality among his classmates in first grade and among the few people who know his secret. But even with them he is secretive.

He tends to be very closemouthed about the things that are really bothering him and will never ask for help even if he needs it. He can deduct motives and solve impossibly complicated riddles but he doesn't really understand people on a personal level.

He also has the worst luck in the world. If there is any kind of disaster happening anywhere, he's practically guaranteed to be right in the middle of it. He can't go anywhere without walking onto the scene of a major crime.

As he is now, Conan has three major goals in his life. To bring an end to the criminal organization that poisoned him, to find a cure and return to his true age and to finally talk to his childhood friend again with his own face and voice.

Conan has the ability to perform Sherlock scans on complete strangers. This means he can take tiny clues in your characters appearance and use deductive logic to figure out things like their hobbies, what they do for a living and where they've traveled recently.  Of course Conan will only be able to interpret things that he knows about from his world.
  1. Is Conan allowed to use a Sherlock Scan on your character?
  2. What observations would he be able to make? Does your character have calluses from a hobby or a particular accent?
  3. What would he be allowed to deduce about your character from observations?
